Membership requirements
The Registration
Committee of the TSP has responsibility for deciding whether a particular
training course is accepted for the purpose of qualifying an individual
for entry into the Register. At the present time, all the training courses
qualifying individuals for membership and listed in the Society’s
Register are under the aegis of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. Whether
or not the quality control of a particular training course is linked to
University accreditation is a matter solely for the training organisation.
The TSP Registration Committee reserves the right, if it considers it
has good reason, to cease registration of new graduates from a training
course previously accepted as qualifying for registration.
An individual practitioner is entered onto the Society’s Register
through qualification as a member of one (or more) of the TSP’s
four Divisions. These four Divisions are:
- the Adult
Psychotherapist Division,
- the Child
and Adolescent Psychotherapist Division,
- the Systemic
Family Psychotherapist Division and
- the Allied
Professional Division.
The establishment
of the Allied Professional Division represents the Society’s concern
to support a variety of different groups of public sector practioners
who play a key role in the field of mental health alongside those with
a formal training in psychotherapy.
Qualification
as an Adult Psychotherapist Division Member requires
- completion
of a training in Adult Psychotherapy giving eligibility for membership
of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).
Qualification
as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist Division Member requires
- EITHER
completion of training giving eligibility for membership of the Association
of Child Psychotherapists (ACP)
- OR in
the case of qualified psychiatrists the satisfactory completion of training
in child and adolescent psychiatry with appropriate additional training
in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Qualification as a Systemic Family Psychotherapist Division Member requires
- completion
of training leading to qualification giving eligibility as a Family
Therapist with the UKCP.
Qualification
as an Allied Professional Division Member requires
- completion
of a psychodynamic or systemic public sector related training programme,
requiring a minimum of two years supervised and assessed observation
and work related practice.
At the discretion
of the TSP Registration Committee, graduates from two-year courses that
are not specifically practice related, may be considered as being eligible
for membership of the Allied Professional Division in those cases where
the teaching programme contains substantial observational and theoretical
modules.
Intermediate levels
of training in psychotherapy play a significant role in the delivery of
psychotherapeutic treatment in the health service, and the Registration
Committee has given graduates from certain intermediate courses Affiliate
Membership of the Adult Psychotherapist Division.
Training staff of
the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, or other training organisations represented
in the Register, are eligible for membership of a Division where their
qualifications are equivalent to that required for registration.
In addition, individuals
who have been Clinical Associates attached to a Tavistock and Portman
Trust training course for at least 18 months duration full time or 3 years
part time, and who are recommended by their Department Training Committee
through the appropriate Organising Tutor are eligible for membership of
the Allied Professional Division, or of one of the other divisions in
those cases where the individual concerned has an appropriate qualification
as a psychotherapist.
Membership requires payment of TSP annual subscription dues.
